2012 Summer Family Mission Adventure

Q & A

When and Where are we going for our adventure?  Phillippi, West Virginia   July 7-15 (this includes travel days)

Who is this adventure for? Individuals, married couples, families, High School Youth – ages 2-102 (anyone under 9th grade must register with a family unit)

What will we do during our Summer Family Mission Adventure? During your trip you will meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the community you journey to.

*Meet physical needs primarily through individual home construction and renovation projects. Most require some combination of the following: light carpentry, deck building, insulating, installing drywall, roof sealing, simple plumbing, painting, general clean-up work (the vast majority of our projects are no experience necessary).

*Meet spiritual needs in a number of creative and culturally appropriate ways. There are a variety of ways the team may reach out to the community; through prayer walking, kid’s company VBS program, community picnic, plus building relationship with the home owners, and neighbors while we serve.  Sometimes we are able to offer specific clinics (reading club, bicycle repair, financial workshops) driven by the skills and interests of the groups serving as they relate to community needs.

Who is leading our Trip?  Craig and Shirley McCourt will provide pre-field training, as well as on site programing.  Shirley and Craig had led several Family Mission Adventures over the year, and led one to this very community in 2009.  We also partners with World Servants to help with logistics, and infield arraignments and follow-up.

How will we get there? Families will Caravan down together.  We will take 2 days to travel down. All participants will need to provide transportation throughout the week for traveling between the housing site and scheduled activities, including the day off. The cost of the trip does not include transportation to and from the mission site.

What about housing and food? Accommodations will be at Alderson-Broaddus College. Each family will be given their own suite of rooms (sleeping rooms with private bath and small sitting room). Breakfast and Dinner will be at the college as well. Lunches will be packed and taken to the worksites with you each day.

Long term Goals? For sustainable, long-term impact, World Servants staff (our partner ministry) live and work in project communities long before you arrive. A team of in-field community leaders are identified to build a vision for their community. World Servants trains and equips these leaders to successfully partner with our short-term teams in an effort to build long-term relationships.  Once our team leave, they continue to strengthen relationships with community leaders and identify extended opportunities for us to come alongside them as well.

What will this cost? Cost for this event is $545.00 per person (children 8 or less are $260) This includes lodging, meals, and program costs.  It is also our intention as a congregation to help cover some of these costs through fund raisers. Partial Scholarships are also available (2 @ $100).
